I wanted to stray away from the typical banter and analysis and ask these simple questions: 1) Which match do you have the most confidence in picking a winner? 2) Which match do you have the least confidence in picking a winner? The only rule I will state is that you cannot pick a team that you root for just to be fair and balanced. I will start: 1) I am most confident in Switzerland defeating Qatar. It was either that match or the Germany Curacao match but I decided to lean towards the Swiss because the Caribbean debutant is so unpredictable. I know what I am getting every time I see Qatar. 2) The match I am least confident in picking a winner is France- Senegal. England- Croatia being a close second but I just cannot get 2002 out of my head when it comes to the Senegalese little brother beating big brother type of situation. How about you? This is just for kicks and giggles. Not going to keep track here at all. Just wondering what other people are thinking.
That's why I mentioned the location. It is hardly La Paz, Bolivia, or even Mexico City but it will have an impact. At least it is an evening kick off so it shouldn't be that hot.I could be wrong, but I don't think 1,500 meters has much effect on world-class athletes. I barely feel it myself. In my experience, the altitude effects seem to be exponential. i.e. its largely unnoticeable until you get to a certain point (~2,500m) and then every 200 meters above that is really noticeable.

If the Uruguay- Saudi Arabia match were in any other stadium in the tournament I would say it would be difficult to pick. Uruguay usually struggles in the first matches of tournaments. Very rarely do they get three points. But playing the match in Miami in a sea of blue makes me say they will probably win this one.

Bielsa won't rest players even if his life depends on it. He will go all out like against the USA in Copa America 2024. Also even if both teams are qualified I doubt that Spain would want to rest players and risk to potentially face Argentina in the R32Good point about the ARG-ESP potential R32 match. Spain has plenty of chances to rest players in their first 2 group matches. Even if they underestimated those opponents, they will probably still be able to recover top spot in the group with a win v Uruguay.

Netherlands v Japan should be a very good match and could go either way. Spain v Cape Verde is a walkover. Spain v Saudi Arabia has also already been picked but not Uruguay v Saudi. Uruguay will pinpoint that one as vital and their mentality will ensure they win it. I'm introducing a third category. The nailed on draw. Uruguay v Spain in Guadalajara. Both teams will have already qualified. Spain will rest players. Uruguay will be happy with a draw and will probably rest players. It is also one of the more appetising first round matches and will therefore disappoint. If it was at any other point during the tournament it would be an intriguing match.

That should make the difference in dominating that match.

I may be wrong here but I still think Spain will beat Uruguay no matter what the context is or which bench players are playing. Uruguay is relying on a geriatric GK to save the day.

It is exactly the sort of fixture that people look forward to and turns out to be a stinker.

Difficult to really pick 1 for each question but if I try hard enough: Most difficult outcome to predict: Ivory Coast vs Ecuador, it really is 50-50 like a few other matches but on top of it, I don’t know those 2 teams well enough to have any idea who has more chances to win at all. Easiest outcome: Spain vs Saudi Arabia, no offense to Saudi people but that is the exact kind of match Spain usually gets over by half time already. Hopefully I am wrong, for the sake for suspense !

From what I could see it reduces oxygen availability by 17% in Guadalajara. It is 25% in Mexico City. La Paz is more like 40%. I expect that would have an impact but I don't know. Could probably get some stats on distance covered in matches played in Guadalajara compared with somewhere at sea level but I'm not geeky enough to bother. You guys are definitely geekin'-out on this...and I'm LOVIN' IT! Playing this sport at unfamiliar altitude DOES make a difference...for both teams, of course.

1. GERvCUR, SUIvQAT, FRAvPO winner, ARGvJOR, BRAvHAI, ENGvPAN, ESPvCPV Even if it's just 1-0 I don't see how the higher ranked team in each of these matches doesn't win. 2. Egypt v Iran, CIV v Ecuador, Senegal v Norway. These are genuine 50/50 games to me.

I read your first paragraph and immediately thought Switzerland-Qatar, before even getting to your picks lol. Least confidence, hmm. Jordan-Algeria?

There's at least 25 games where I have zero confidence in predicting. So, will choose from matchday 3 games as that has an additional layer of unpredictability (teams resting players): Egypt v Iran Turkiye v US Czechia x Mexico

Could be another Argentina v Holland 2006.
