Argentina, Spain and France are among the teams managing fitness problems as club schedules pile pressure on players before 2026. Injury concerns are mounting across several leading World Cup 2026 camps, with packed club schedules leaving a number of stars arriving on international duty in uncertain condition. Argentina appear to be carrying the heaviest medical load. Lionel Messi is dealing with hamstring inflammation and is working on an individual programme, while Nico Paz has a knee injury and Gonzalo Montiel has suffered a serious quadriceps tear that is expected to keep him out for at least three weeks. Emiliano Martínez, Argentina’s first-choice goalkeeper, is also nursing a minor finger fracture. Elsewhere, Neymar Jr is said to be following a special preparation plan because of long-running joint problems and the effects of a prolonged spell away from the pitch. Spain are monitoring Lamine Yamal after a long season with Barcelona left him with severe muscle fatigue, while France are keeping close watch on Ousmane Dembélé because of recurring thigh muscle issues. Medical staff are on alert and using physio and workload management to limit any worsening of the problems. Coaches are also expected to avoid unnecessary risks in friendlies to protect key players ahead of the tournament. https://cornerflick.com/football/news/world-cup-injury-crisis-alarms-major-nations

My worry is that this does not sound like an entertaining watch. Hopefully I’m wrong. It depends. There could be some major upsets and teams that come out of nowhere to win. That can be VERY entertaining to watch.

Meanwhile, Argentina saying Messi is available for tonight's friendly against Iceland. I wonder if they're caving to pressure because the match is being played in one of those huge college football stadiums in Alabama. Capacity is 88,000 although I have no idea if its a sellout. It would be pretty remarkable if it is. I mean, a friendly against Iceland....

Speaking of the Netherlands, now Timber has officially been ruled out of the WC as well. The Dutch are in some trouble, I feelYeah, losing Timber is a big hit. The Dutch still have quality players, but they're definitely looking a bit vulnerable now.

While I like the idea of top flights being limited to 18 teams (=34 league matches per season) and one domestic cup competition (like France). we all know that if UEFA installs these limits to shorten the club season, FIFA would just use it as an excuse to create another new national team-competition or further bloat the existing ones. Also, I'm not sure how it would work in practice if you had shorter club competitions only in WC years. But even if there was a simple way of implementing that, I don't like having different club competitions formats every season, especially given <0.5% of professional players actually play in the World Cup.It would benefit the vast majority if every domestic premier league was limited to 18 clubs but it would require FIFA to instigate an initiative to form a general consensus to achieve it.

It is going to be a battle of attrition. Longest tournament in history. Most travel in history. Probably the worst weather in history. Whoever wins this World Cup will be the team that finds a way to mange all of these things and just find ways to survive and advance.

Xavi Simons, Netherlands Injury: Torn ACL Tottenham Hotspur's first Premier League win of 2026 -- 1-0 against Wolves at the end of April -- came at a great cost: Simons tore an ACL in the second half. While no guaranteed starter, Simons was set to play a strong role across the attacking midfield line for the Dutch. This injury strengthens Manchester City midfielder Tijjani Reijnders' grip on the playmaking role and reopened the door for Justin Kluivert, who is about to return from a four-month knee injury of his own and made a late bolt to make the squad. src: ESPN

They really should look at shortening the club season and club competitions in world cup years. It's FIFA which needlessly expanded its competitions. You can't expect club football - the lifeblood of the game - to bend to FIFA's expansionism which is incidentally subject to legal challenges by European Leagues and FIFPRO Europe.

My worry is that this does not sound like an entertaining watch. Hopefully I’m wrong. The EUROS has always been more entertaining than the WC when it comes to NT football.
